Here are a few tips of what you should always check before calling in the specialists - it could save you a trip charge by a technician.

1. Ensure that the appliance is properly connected.
a. Check that the plug is securely pushed in to the outlet.
b. Make sure all plumbing is properly fastened to the water supply and the water is turned on.
c. Check that all drains are properly connected and aren’t clogged or plugged.

2. Check your breaker/fuse box to be sure the breaker isn't tripped. If you are constantly tripping breakers, you may need to call an electrician to check the wiring.

3. Double-check all your appliance's doors and lids to ensure they are closed. Refrigerators can’t maintain temperature if the air is leaking out through an open door. Dishwashers shouldn’t operate if the door is not fully closed and many washers and dryers won’t run at all or during some cycles with the doors open.

4. Take a look at your owner’s manual to make sure you’re following recommended operating procedures and check the troubleshooting tips.

5. Check the appliance documentation to be sure you are operating the appliance within its capacity. Make sure the appliance is capable of what you’re trying to do.

6. Countertop microwaves are often not worth repairing. If you have a convection oven, microwave, or a microwave hood, those are usually worth repairing but the standard counter top styles can be cheaper to replace than it would be to have a repair service diagnose the problem.
